There are three phases in a South Beach Diet. First phase involves reducing the amount of carbohydrates being ingested and this phase often lasts for 2 weeks. The goal of this phase is to deal with the body’s resistance to insulin and achieve and initial weight loss of about 13 pounds. The second phase is the re-introduction of low glycemic carbohydrates like those found in fruits and vegetables. A 1-2 pound weight loss per week is expected during this phase which often lasts until the individual reaches his or her target weight. The third phase is called the lifestyle phase and this phase lasts for as long as one decides to stay on a South Beach Diet.
