Fat loss diets can be defined as the diets which provide lesser calories than what you burn in your system. A person will lose fat if this simple arithmetic is followed. The number of calories that you burn in your system is given by a figure called BMR or basal metabolic rate.
This does not include the calories expended through physical activity. Knowledge of your BMR gives you the key to plan for a diet. As a rough estimate, the BMR is your body weight in pounds multiplied by 10. So if your body weight is 170 pounds and your BMR therefore 1700, then you must plan for diets which yield less than 1700 calories per day.
There are various opinions about what constitutes the fat loss diets. There are arguments for and against diets made up of carbohydrates on one hand and proteins on the other. Following what was said earlier, if you focus your attention on the calorie aspect and consume less calories than you burn, you need not get embroiled in this controversies and choose a fat loss diet to your liking. There are also debates about the number of meals you should take each day. Apart from weight loss, there are other health concerns to be considered. Eating 3-4 times a day should normally suffice. If you have to eat more times, you have to cut down on the intake to make your fat loss diet program work.
In a diet designed for fat loss, watching fat consumption is equally important as calorie counts. The reason is that one gram of fat provides more calories than an equal amount of carbohydrates and proteins. So it is more difficult to burn a gram of fat than other. The diet constituents, must take this factor into account. It is also the basis of many Fat Loss Products selling in the market.
Fats contain both saturated and unsaturated fatty acids. The saturated fats raise body cholesterol level and so their consumption should be curtailed. Most common sources of saturated fats are milk, dairy products, meat, and bakery products like cakes, potato chips and even doughnuts.
